Orange Sitara goes even further…

July 20th, 2008 by Yashvin

Most of us complained a lot of times that Orange Sitara was completely copied from other international famous dance/singing competition…

Well, seems they tried to be original, for once….

Since some weeks they brought a new concept into the competion….

They made the participants sing, dance and even the mentors had to perform live…

And one of them thought:

Why dont we make the musicians sing???

Well, that was a completely foolish idea… at least for me…

Since some weeks, the musicians have been performing live, practically most of them, from the electronic keyboard player, the guitarist to the tabla player (technically known as a tabalti)

The story does not stop here!!!

They have even introduced another extra into this concept:

Why not make the viewers vote for the musicians???

LOL ! Who will want to spend rs10 per sms to vote for them (except the family members and friends of course)…

Surtout dans ene lepok kot p serre ceinture and petrol p monter lol…

No need to tell you how “fabulous” those musicians perform, LIVE !
Hoever, not applicable to all, but still !

Something perhaps the organisers (mbc) might find informative to know, musicians are made to play musical instruments and not all of them know really how to sing, ya, they do sing, but not all of them are  good enough to sing LIVE on a national television channel…

I am was a musician too, some years back, ya lol, i was a tabalti (tabla n dholok player) in religions ceremonies (ya lol! believe it or not, i played in kirtans and bhajans, despite i never believed in god!) lol…
I also play electronic keyboard, but nowadays, i rarely have the time to spend some time playing music, since am blogging lol…
My Dad, and uncle too are musicians, and at times, they even sang & played instruments in weddings, hotels etc, as a hobby/leisure of course!

We are not big singers/musicians(not me definitely), but i dont go live onto tv to show that i can sing when i dont know how to!

However, there are not many musicians who can play their instruments and sing at the same time, except of course, famous superstars singers which Orange Sitara wants to build here in Mauritius it seems lol…

lol, just before blogging, Vicky was telling me that “to ene fan orange sitara twa”.
In fact ya, but not exactly, as i like to watch their show because of their originality, stupidity(sometimes and often lol), copying of international ideas/concepts, importance they give to certain persons,  quality of tv platforms they offer here in Mauritius to promote new talents…

For sure, they do make the best SHOW on tv lol !

So, how do you find this innovative and orginal concept brought forward on our “petit ecran” these days???

A privacy policy for Google Adsense

July 19th, 2008 by avinash

A lot of bloggers I know display Google advertisements on their respective blogs in order to earn some money. Naturally, I also have two Google advertisements on every page of this blog for exactly the same reason… (I’d like to point out that I have not received any cheque from Google up to now.)

This service from Google is called Google Adsense.

I got a comment today from Josh who told me that I need to have a privacy page on this blog to comply with Google’s Adsense latest Terms and Conditions. Using Google (what else?), I discovered a blog entry by Jennifer Slegg explaining in details the changes brought by Google. The most relevant paragraph is:

You must have and abide by an appropriate privacy policy that clearly discloses that third parties may be placing and reading cookies on your users’ browser, or using web beacons to collect information, in the course of ads being served on your website. Your privacy policy should also include information about user options for cookie management.

The idea is to make explicit that Google uses web beacons aka web bugs and cookies to track visitors. I suppose this brings some peace of mind to Google lawyers.

Then I realized…

This blog, noulakaz.net, is in violation with the terms and conditions and Google might terminate my Adsense account anytime. Fortunately, Jennifer Slegg has also thoughtfully written a sample privacy policy which she has made public. I read it and realized it was much too long for my blog. With some cut and paste, I finally came up with:

The privacy of visitors to noulakaz.net is important to me. Like most other websites, I collect and use the data contained in log files. I do use cookies to store information, such as your personal preferences when you visit my blog. To support my weblog, I also use third party advertisements which may use cookies and web beacons. You can choose to disable or selectively turn off our cookies in your browser settings or by managing security preferences. However, this can affect how you are able to interact with noulakaz.net as well as other websites.

Nice and compact! I’ve added this to my About page.

15 Common Mistakes

Not having a privacy policy was a mistake. But it’s arguably a cosmetic mistake. The baddest mistake as far as Google Adsense is concerned is for someone to click on his own Adsense ads or get them clicked for whatever reason (e.g. click on my links coz i need to pay for my hosting.) I came across this list of 15 Common Mistakes that violate Google Adsense Terms & Conditions and I would strongly advise all bloggers using Adsense to go through it once or twice.

Addendum

The “Software Failure / Guru Meditation” picture shown above should bring tears to those happy few who had an Amiga 15-20 years ago… To the rest, this is what we got when the Amiga crashed. No blue screen of death. No core dump. Instead, we had a flashing Guru Meditation message. People were cool at that time…

Tâches ménagères: utilisez votre temps judicieusement - House chores: use your time wisely

July 19th, 2008 by pngpingching

=====
  • Sort your house chores into daily, weekly or monthly ones.
  • Start your laundry before starting to vacuum, dusting your furniture or go grocery shopping. This advice is also valid for those of you who have a dishwasher.
  • Iron your clothes while watching TV. You’ll kill two birds with one shot.
  • If you don’t have a dishwasher, don’t wait until the sink is full before starting to do the dishes. A plate, that you just used, will take less time to wash, dry, and put away than ten plates, a pan, ten glasses, and ten cups.
  • Buy high quality cleaning products. They will probably be more expensive, but you’ll use less of them and save time.
  • And spend less time on www.facebook.com.

UOM End of Academical Yr Party 2008

July 19th, 2008 by Yashvin

Back to University yesterday, this time to ‘chill out’ in The University Of Mauritius End of Academical Year Party 2008.

Early in the morning, i set out for a long drive since i had taken my day off from work to hmm hmm…

Late in the evening, i reached Reduit where i met lots of friends (again) and we took some drinks before we entered the uom permises which was quite well secured with the loads of police officers controlling the access to the Party.

The food court was again in the Basement Parking like the years before…

Unlike last year, I had no coupons to get my dinner, instead i had to pay for the 2 bbq which I took.

Effectively, this year, my sis had done the necessary to get our names in the list of guests for the party since i am not a uom student, not now (again lol, perhaps for my masters now)…

Chill Out Orange Night Party

Btw, the party was held in Raised Plaza and the schedule was as follows

17 30 - 18 30 - Chill Out with Buddha Bar
18 30 - 19 00 - Live Tecktonik Show
19 00 - 22 00 - DanceFloor with DJs Xceed & Yan
SMS Dedication & Games

At 2000hrs, the dance floor was quite ‘empty’

But some 30mins after, lol, it was completely full!

Here is a video of the party….

There was Orange Lucky Draw Coupons being distributed everywhere, which allowed you to enter a draw by filling in your name, tel numbers etc to win gifts at the end of the party…

Damn it!

How many of us did bring a pen during party? LOL !

pssst P

You can read the post of the End of Academical Year Party 2007 and the End of Year Party 2006

Chilled out! lol!

The Data Center Lady

July 18th, 2008 by Stéphane Lee

If you browse some Internet services websites regularly, you should recognise this lady. We call her the “datacenter lady” or the “Ensim lady.” This picture is in some royalty-free image banks. She is being used (and abused) on many websites.

Datacenter Lady

TinEye lists about 37 websites using this picture but I personally know some more. She was previously on ensim.com.

Here is a good sample of the websites:

The best one, I think, is this. Being featured on the front cover of a MySQL database book is quite a feat.

Download real fast with ed2k

July 18th, 2008 by Hans

If you want something fast but can’t rely on torrents for your downloads, then you can have them through ed2K which is simply downloading them with eMule. Instead of searching for your downloads with eMule and falling on crappy stuffs, you can use ed2K links which are available on the web. It’s just like the torrent you download first to launch your download with your torrent client. The plus is that you’ve all the advantages like the torrent for e.g comments and feedbacks on the download so that you don’t waste your download time downloading porn.

So make sure eMule is installed and fully functional on your machine for this to work. Now to look for a particular download, you can google it or you can use the two sites I’ve provided according to your language preferences.

download real fast with emule-island

Sharevirus holds everything from movies to albums on ed2K links while eMule-island is its french brother. I’m sure there are loads of such sites. Emule-island has been reliable for getting dvd rips or even HD quality films!

As with everything downloaded from the net, make sure to scan your downloads with a good antivirus. Else, Cheers!

Expanding/collapsing javascript menu

July 17th, 2008 by asvin

In this post I'll show you how to create an expanding/collapsing menu like Slashdot left menu used to be, using the YUI library and Dav Glass YUI effects widget.

Preview of the script we are going to build.

The HTML markup for our menu is :

  1.
  2. <div id="menu">
  3. <h1 id="menu-title">Menu</h1>
  4. <div id="menu-links">
  5. <li>Home</li>
  6. <li>About</li>
  7. <li>CSS</li>
  8. </ul></div>
  9. </div>
  10.

We use 2 div tags, one for holding the menu itself and the other one which contains the links in an unordered list and 1 h1 tag for the title.

The CSS for the menu :

  1.
  2. /** width of the menu */
  3. #menu{
  4. width: 180px;
  5. }
  6.
  7. /** the main title */
  8. #menu h1{
  9. line-height: 35px;
  10. color: #fff;
  11. /** simulate link */
  12. cursor: pointer;
  13. font-weight: bold;
  14. /** background image will change when menu expands/collapses */
  15. background: #666 url(images/block-arrow-expanded.gif) no-repeat scroll 30px 13px;
  16. }
  17.
  18. /** the links */
  19. #menu-links li{
  20. line-height: 35px;
  21. border-bottom:1px solid #ddd;
  22. background-color: #eee;
  23. }
  24.

Please pay attention to the background for the #menu h1. It contains the image, which will change when the menu collapses or expands. When the menu collapses we'll be using the block-arrow-collapsed.gif image and when the menu expands we'll be using the block-arrow-expanded.gif image. You can find the images in the sample demo file in the images directory.

To do the collapsing/expanding effects, we need to include the following javascript files beforehand :

  1.
  2. <!-- js -->
  3. <script type="text/javascript" src="http://yui.yahooapis.com/combo?2.5.2/build/yahoo-dom-event/yahoo-dom-event.js&2.5.2/build/animation/animation-min.js"></script>
  4. <script type="text/javascript" src="js/tools-min.js"></script>
  5. <script type="text/javascript" src="js/effects-min.js"></script>
  6.

We use Dav Glass YAHOO.Tools package and his effects widget along with yahoo-dom-event-animation aggregate file which are hosted on Yahoo servers.

Finally the javascript to do the magical stuff goes like that :

  1.
  2. <script type="text/javascript">
  3. YAHOO.util.Event.addListener('menu-title', 'click', function(){
  4. if(YAHOO.util.Dom.getStyle('menu-links', 'display') == 'block'){
  5. new YAHOO.widget.Effects.BlindUp('menu-links', {seconds: 0.2});
  6. YAHOO.util.Dom.setStyle('menu-title', 'background-image', 'url(images/block-arrow-collapsed.gif)');
  7. }
  8. else{
  9. new YAHOO.widget.Effects.BlindDown('menu-links', {seconds: 0.2});
  10. YAHOO.util.Dom.setStyle('menu-title', 'background-image', 'url(images/block-arrow-expanded.gif)');
  11. }
  12. });
  13. </script>
  14.

In line 3 of the above listing, we wait when the user clicks on the menu-title container and we check the display attribute of our links. If the links are not currently displayed then we display them by using Dav's BlindDown effect with a duration of 0.2 seconds ;-).

  1.
  2. new YAHOO.widget.Effects.BlindDown('menu-links', {seconds: 0.2});
  3.

We also change the background image for the menu title by using the YAHOO.util.Dom.setStyle method:

  1.
  2.
  3. YAHOO.util.Dom.setStyle('menu-title', 'background-image', 'url(images/block-arrow-expanded.gif)');
  4.

If the links are visible then we do the contrary, i.e we use the BlindUp effect and use the collapsed gif as background image.

Tomb Raider: Underworld

July 17th, 2008 by tushal

I’m a big fan of Tomb Raider and I have enjoyed playing all the releases.But the one I’m waiting eagerly is Underworld which will be as near as “real life”

According to Wikipedia:

Tomb Raider: Underworld, also known as Tomb Raider 8, is the eighth game in the Tomb Raider series and the third game in the series to be developed by Crystal Dynamics. It will resume the adventure from where Tomb Raider: Legend left off and address elements of the plot left unexplained in Legend and Tomb Raider: Anniversary, which are Crystal Dynamics’ previous games in the series.

It was announced in January 2008 that Tomb Raider: Underworld will be released in the fourth quarter of 2008, as opposed to the third quarter as was previously planned. In June 2008, it was announced that the game would be released in November 2008.

According to tombraiderchronicles.com, the first trailer for Tomb Raider: Underworld will be released on the 18th of July.

According to Tombnews:

For generations, stories have been told of the fearsome weapon of the Norse god Thor. Legend holds that he who wields the hammer has the power to smash mountains into valleys and the strength to destroy even the gods. For more than a thousand years it has existed only as a myth…until now.

In an ancient ruin on the floor of the Mediterranean Sea, Lara Croft uncovers proof of the Norse underworld and the mythical hammer. As she attempts to unravel the secrets behind these myths, Lara’s perilous journey leads her toward a forgotten power that, if unleashed, could lay waste to all civilization.

PC, Xbox360, PS3, PS2 and Wii FEATURES

  • Master your surroundings: Reach new heights with the broadest range of acrobatic abilities and utilize objects within the environment to uncover new paths to explore.
  • Explore epic and unknown worlds: Discover ancient mysteries of the underworld hidden within the coast of Thailand, frozen islands of the Arctic Sea, the jungles of Mexico, and more.
  • Treacherous and unpredictable challenges: Each level is an elaborate multi-stage puzzle masked within an interactive environmental playground offering more flexibility over how the area is solved.
  • New range of combat options: Choose to pacify or kill, target multiple enemies at once with the new dual-target system, and shoot with one hand while suspended with the other.
  • New state-of-the-art gear: Utilize the latest technology in Lara’s upgraded inventory to navigate the world including:
    - Active Sonar map: A revolutionary new tool that emits an active sonar ping to create a 3D image of Lara’s surroundings, perfect for uncovering hidden items and locations.
    - Multi-purpose grapple: A claw-like device with a high-tension cable designed for climbing, rappelling, performing wall runs and manipulating objects within the environment.
    - All-terrain hybrid motorbike: A unique vehicle design built to drive on everything from mud to snow and ice.

Screenshots:

According to Actiontrip:

Tomb Raider Underworld, the much talked about new installment in the popular Tomb Raider series, is finally coming together. Eidos Interactive and Crystal Dynamics did a pretty decent job of enlivening the franchise after Core Design’s disastrous TR: The Angel of Darkness. After breathing life back into Lara’s character with Tomb Raider: Legend, Crystal Dynamics delivered a fine recap of the whole TR series and offered a few cool new elements in Tomb Raider: Anniversary. It was only a matter of time before Eidos would green light a brand new escapade of the world’s sexiest archeologist.

Mmm… steamy, shiny Lara!

One wrong step and she becomes cat food.

In her latest adventures, Lara embarks upon the secrets of the ancient Mayan civilization, eventually making her way into the underworld, known as Xibalba. Still in its early stages, TR Underworld is barely just beginning to take shape, hence neither Eidos nor Crystal have revealed details on the game’s narrative. The story in Legend was well-written and it kept players going throughout the entire game. It was pointed out that the writers will continue to build upon this type of story-telling. If you recall, Legend featured a much darker outline of Lara’s character, when compared to earlier games, so I guess they mean to continue down that particular road.

Another priority is to focus on better overall gameplay mechanics. Lara’s vast range of familiar moves and attacks sees a welcomed return. So, that means all the somersaulting, shimmying, jumping, swinging, dual-wielding and similar traits are back once again. More than that, you can expect a number of added tweaks to the combat system that will help Lara get the better of her many foes. She’ll be able to use her dual-pistols to take out two separate targets at once and alternatively fire both weapons at a single target. The grappling hook is also back to ease your movement through the surroundings. To spruce things up, combat is going to feature a full set of acrobatic moves, on top of kicks, punches and other cool improvements to allow for more complex close combat. Objects in the environment, such as poles, may be picked up and used as handy melee weapons.

Visit its website for the complete story.

Sms? ?

July 17th, 2008 by tushal

Since long time{perhaps 3 weeks}, I have noticed that my credit finish very quick.

So I tried to monitor my usage and found out something very interessting which till now, my fucking customer care has not been able to give me an answer.

cost of 1 sms= Rs0.60

Which means basically with Rs 85, one can send around 140 messages.

But last week,  Rs85 ended after I sent 76 messages! ! ! !

No phone calls.Only messages.I was quite shocked and surprise how the hell can my card be over.

2 days after, I tried something.I send a message on my mum’s mobile and I was shocked to see that I was charged Rs1.20 for sending 1 message.But my mum received the same message twice.

I was like.Oh my fucking god..

Yesterday, I sent a cousin’s a message and I was surprise that I was charged Rs1.80 for sending the 1 message and he received the message 3 times! !

I changed my sim{changed operator}{I thought that perhaps it could be my mobile doing that} but no.It worked well with the other sim.

Yesterday Night, I was talking with some cousins and 3 among them had the same problem like me! !

What the fuck! !Is this a new way for my noobish provider to make more money? ? ?

P:s I’m off. Its weekend tomorrow.Will be back online on Monday or Tuesday.
