I, for one, dislike the “need your help in return of forced and restrictive dates” chicks for you end up giving and giving and get nothing in return for even though you’re valued a little (very little,) the social ineptitude nukes you down (also applicable for this particular XKCD comic.)

Gosh, having the knack, finding and keeping the right chick represent a set of impossible concurrent tasks.

The answer to the question - The chicks are out there. Some are just soiled and wild. If you fancy hunting the (the thrill is in the chase not the catch) wild ones, there are plenty of them. Else, adapt your inner Tandoka scale detector to look for the cute, short, sci-fi chick with lovely hair to woo.

I can’t wait to watch the entire premiere of Sanctuary. Amanda Tapping plays Helen Magnus in the series. The web episodes were fine but when these will be combined, it will be much better.

So, what if you did get one with a high priced keyboard, mouse, and monitor, regardless of whether you’ve known about the limitations or not?! How do you survive?

Important Note: You’ve only 30 hours of internet access per month. Use the web apps wisely. Increase the cache of your browser as well.

First, frak the Win2K3 on the Net PC. Fire up your browser and launch eyeOS.

eyeOS is a new kind of Operating System, where everything resides on a web browser. With eyeOS, you will have your desktop, applications and files always with you, from your home, your college, your office or your neighbour’s house. Just open a web browser, connect to your eyeOS System and access your personal desktop and all your stuff just like you left it last time.

Now, you’ll probably require an Office suite (’coz many of you are IC3 people :P) and can’t adapt to MS. Office 2K7. Considering the fact that having a gmail account does help you in getting to use the Google Online Office thingies (Google docs), it’s not so good - ‘coz most of you are still noobs and require different accounts for different things. (What if someone else gets hold of your gmail password? Your documents will get compromised.)
So, think free. Really, do think free. LOL - I mean use thinkfree.

ThinkFree Online is a free online edition that runs Write, Calc and Show in a browser using a mix of Java applet and Ajax technologies. Each user is allotted 1 GB of online storage space for saving documents. ThinkFree Online lets users collaborate on documents with others, publish to a blog or the web. ThinkFree Online also keeps a version history per document of the changes that are made. The Java applet version, or Power Edit mode, exists for all three applications, and appears to be an applet port of the original desktop versions written in Java. Ajax-based Quick Edit mode (offered for Write and Show only) can run without the need of starting up an applet. Also, ThinkFree Online is support sync manager utility for seamless connect among the desktop and web and mobile workspace.

Now, you’ll need a calendar (’coz you’ll be hearing about the web 2.0 people talking about their online calendars and you’ll crave for one.) You’ve got to remember the milk.

Remember the Milk allows users to create multiple task lists. Added tasks can be edited to include (or not) various fields. Locations can be added, and an integrated Google Maps feature allows users to save commonly used locations. Tasks can also be organised by tags. Tasks can be postponed and Remember the Milk will inform users of the number of times that that task has been postponed.

Oh, what else? You’re student and have work to deliver in PDF. Gosh, what will you do? No need to panic. Neevia can help you out.

Oh, you can’t install Google Talk (even if it’s ajax based in your gmail window) and Skype.
Go for Meebo.
As far as Skype goes, use a thumb drive and save Skype Portable. Run it from there.

What about photo editing? You can’t install the Adobe suite or Gimp or Krita. Fire up Photoshop Express in your web browser. Don’t worry about space, you’ll get 2GB of free space to store your pics (do enable your privacy settings.)

If you’re not fond of photoshop and want something way simpler, give Pixenate a try.

What if you’re a uni student in the field of computing and need to do some serious coding? You can ask a friend to follow the instructions here and make a portable Netbeans for you to use from your thumb drive.

And of course, there’s the basic codeide which currently supports BASIC, Pascal, C, C++, JavaScript, Perl, HTML and DBMS MySQL.

Coming to think of it, portable apps may be your salvation because web apps are limited by the 30 hour monthly internet access limit.  You’ve got to admire how we live a la web 2.0 in Mauritius! </sarcasm>

Some of the above mentioned apps are cool. Even if you don’t have a Net PC, give them a try.

THE last flying display of the Farnborough International Airshow 2008 took place yesterday, with The Red Arrows closing the show as fits the tradition.

I took over 200 pictures and now have to triage them for post-processing. There will be disappointments of missed shots and having used the wrong settings on the camera. But, looking on the bright side, I managed more “keeps” than during the last airshow.

Anyway, until Farnborough Airshow 2010, enjoy the pictures (more will be added as I get done with them) and some interesting facts about the event.

• Farnborough International Airshow is the world’s largest temporary exhibition. The “build up” period takes 4 months prior to the start of the show.
• 3,600 tonnes of temporary structures are transported to the show site
• 90,000 sq. metres of structures are erected on site, providing tailor -made floor space that would accommodate London’s Royal Albert Hall no fewer than 30 times!
• Some 6,000 contractors will be on site at peak time to create the exhibition halls, chalets, company facilities and public dining areas.
• Around 1,500 exhibiting companies from 35 countries attend the show

I still have 200+ pictures to triage before starting editing the good ones, but could not hold onto these three.

I get it - people have few space and less time to type entire sentences. But this is applicable to stressful environments mainly in gaming. Else, if you’re stressed and not willing to type properly, and someone else isn’t, why the frak do you have to add decryption of your text to the burden of the receiver of the message?

Am I the only one who writes full english statements in my SMS/MMS/twitter/Messaging serving?

I still remember the day Chris, an ole’ friend of time, replaced the word “something” by “summit” - gosh, I spent hours deciphering what he had meant. And the madness still goes on.

Part of a convo (abbreviation for conversation in ‘Net Lingo) I’ve had with someone over a message service:

i respect wat u thnk
not tat bad for the time
1 min plz
u make me shock

Sure, one may argue that short message service is expensive, but come on - sending 2 SMS instead of 1 and writing properly save receivers’ lives (provided they aren’t fond of Internet Lingo as well).

I get the following a lot, when writing properly:

dont b so formal

Does this mean that proper english is viewed as “formal”? I don’t get it at all.

What about the path to “Idiocracy”?

Well, “Idiocracy” is a movie which depicts the future of the human race. Check out Matt’s video review below.

‘Netlingo taking over language is a sign of humanity getting dumber.

What will happen if you go to a doctor and the latter communicates as follows?

Overuse of animated pictures/smileys (emoticons) also sucks. The common ones are ok:

1. *smile*
2. *sad*
3. *sticking tongue out*
4. *rolling eyes*
5. *hug*

And if the above are indeed used, they should be accompanied with textual information or fit the convo.

People should use smileys wisely instead of packing up their messages with them. They cause clutter. I do admit that having a china flag as smiley is cool during the times of the Olympics.

Think of Internet/SMS lingo as french kissing, and English as hand kissing. The latter is a far more pleasurable and elegant turn on than the “ewww” cliche former.

Stop the crappy Internet Lingo! Or else, you’ll be contributing to the decrease in the mean IQ of humanity.

Note 1: The Internet Lingo is also taking over other languages, and not only English. E.g. I once believed that “mdr” was a political party. It was only way later that I found out that it meant “mort de rire.” (French)

Note 2: I’m ok with L337 though - provided the one you write to, understands the same L337 dialect as the one you use.
